Sir Henry

We were up and about on Newmarket gallops at 6:45 am! There were a few horses doing the run down but gradually more and then joined by masses of "spectators". Turned out to be a semi-press conference by one of the most well know racing horse trainers, Sir Henry Cecil, conducted from the saddle of "hacking nag". Dozens of journalists and press photographers watching the horse "Tenby" doing his final workout, ridden by the legendary Pat Eddery, before the Epsom Derby the following week. Tenby was the clear 4/5 favourite. Also present but didn't interest anyone was another Cecil horse, "Commander in Chief" who was not well proved but did start as the second favourite at 15/2. Cut a long story short, Tenby finished 10th and Commander in Chief won!

Back to the hotel for breakfast, a shop in Newmarket before driving to Cambridge, a sombre and sobering walk around the US war cemetery and then into town to see the punts and university buildings.

Then off to the River Great Ouse and locks at St Neots followed by looking at the ducks at Grafham Water, Kimbolton Castle and finally arriving at our next hotel, The Falcon Inn at Castle Ashby near Northampton where we met up with an old colleague and dear friend Phil for dinner.
