In Memoriam
This little cherub is not attached to a gravestone, nor any other funereal edifice but is the last remaining decorative feature of an elegant building that was destroyed in the construction of the British Home Stores at 64 Princes Street. I think there would have been 21 in total.
According to Lost Edinburgh the building in question was the headquarters of the North British & Mercantile Insurance Company, itself a replacement of the original from Craig's Georgian design, but was more attractive than the Brutalist 1960's façade that replaced it. Andrew Cusack has written an interesting detailed history.
To find this you must look up (if you are not local try Google Streetview) between the Western edge of the (at present, 'Scottish') Home Stores and its red sandstone neighbour and sympathise with the lone cherub who has been denied the companionship of its 20 friends.
