And thereby hangs a tail.
Or even a tale.
In that weird language known as Cumberland (Or maybe more accurately Lakeland) Dialect any kind of loach is (Or was when we were kids) know as a ''Liggy'': short for liggy-bottom, because they spend a goodly proportion of their time liggin' or lying on the bottom of the stream.
We used, for many years, to have a tropical fish-tank or two and a friend of ours came round one day, saw our most recent Plecostomus and enquired
''What sek Liggy's that?'' or, as you might say ... "What kind of loach is that?''
Ever since then they've been known in the family as a Whatsek.
We were in the most recent cupateria and were forced around the corner, where we spotted a tank with him/her in it.
FYO ...''These fish are sold when they are young and small, but they can grow to be a maximum size of 50cm (20 in).'' Dead link
Next question ... Having just found this ''A New Genus of African Loach Catfish ...................'' I'm now forced to ask ... Is a Loach a catfish or vice versa? All cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.
