The Great Gate

Also known as Fyndon's Gate because it was built during the time of Abbot Fyndon, 1297 - 1309. It was the main entrance to the monastic compound of St Augustine's Abbey in Canterbury. St Augustine founded the monastery in 598 having been sent, by the pope, to convert the English.

The original site now houses the abbey remains, the old prison, King's School - through this gate - and Canterbury Christ Church University. The university is on the land previously used as the abbey orchards and for domestic buildings.

This shot is from Lady Wootton's Green - a name which dates back to Charles I

So there ya go - some history innit!
