This is just not right!
It was nice to find one of my favourite insects, rosemary beetle, when I was gardening today, but it really didn't seem right to find them mating...in early January! Mind you, it did get to over 9 degrees today - very unseasonal! I was able to observe this pair for ages as they were quite focused on their joint activity; I didn't see the smaller 7-spot ladybird climbing the same rosemary stem at first, then had a mad scramble to get it in the same shot before it hurried on past the courting couple without so much as a sideways glance. Seriously, this sort of mild weather in the middle of winter is worrying - many insects will suffer by emerging from diapause and being susceptible to hazards like fungal attack and predation by birds. Bring back the frosts!
