Funeral Flotilla
We spotted this flotilla heading across the bay when my neighbor and I were out kayaking this morning. At first I thought it might have something to do with the gasoline price increase protests and blockades theorizing that fishermen and panga drivers are forced to pay the much higher prices for gas as well. When we got to Playa Las Gatas and saw the big wreath and crowd gathered at one of the restaurants, we realized it was a memorial service for a long-time fisherman who had just died of cancer and these boats were ferry family and friends to the service. The red boat shown in the thumbnail (and formerly featured here) was the fishing boat he had used to take countless anglers out to sea during his time here. Later on as they passed in front Playa La Ropa, I had time to capture this photo with the pier, from which many a fishing trip is launched, in the background.
