Observations in time

Maori life

It was fun learning a bit more about where the Maori people came from today at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

We took a guided tour and then had a wander back through the floor commemorating the Wars which was pretty comprehensive.

J took pictures of planes for my uncle who is dotty about them, and we sat through a fictional construction of a volcanic eruption in Auckland harbour.

The Maori carvings are impressive and this one was from the life size Marae (communal or sacred place) inside the museum.

Following on from that we walked to the Art Gallery (Toi o Tamaki) where S joined us for an exhibition of Maori paintings by Gottfried Lindauer. He used an interesting technique where he incorporated photography, using the image as the basis for his painting.

We rounded off the day with a final NZ meal before heading back to Devonport and a spell packing.
