I received the excellent book The Urban Woodsman: A modern guide to carving spoons, bowls and boards by Max Bainbridge for Christmas. First thing I needed to do was stock up on some basic tools - Max recommended Mora knives, a renowned Swedish brand which suited me fine as they would complement my great Swedish Wetterlings axe - don't know the history of why Sweden is home to some great blade makers but they seem to know their craft.
At the weekend I picked out a fallen silver birch in our wood and brought sections home ready for spoon and bowl making - it'll need to dry out first so watch this space!
