Pretense

This spider is desperately pretending to be invisible.  I nearly grabbed him by the short and curleys when I was weeding in the garden, so he immediately tucked up and if he had eyelids he would have closed his eyes - all eight of them.

He's a badge spider - but you can only see the badge on his underside, and I did try to turn him over, at which point he extended all his legs, tripled in size, and scurried off at the rate of knots into some cover.
