Mahabelipuram
Today we are travelling up to Mahabelipuram, a sleepy little town famed for its 6th - 8th century rock carvings. There are quite a few of these carvings and it is a wonder to think that such beautiful works of art were hewn out of granite stone so long ago.
We also visited the Shore temple, a small carved temple on the edge of the sea. The guide told me, and l can remember hearing of it at the time, that during the tsunami of 2003 the sea was sucked so far back out of the bay that temples that had long ago been submerged were seen again. Some rocks were taken from them and added to the Shore temple.
