Virga Cloud
I got quite excited after spotting these clouds as we drove around town this morning, but also frustrated as, with buildings and trees in the way, I could not get a sufficiently clear sighting to confirm my suspicions until, fortuitously, we stopped traffic lights.
Virga, or Jellyfish, Clouds are formed when precipitation, from the water or ice crystals within, does not reach the ground but evaporates through warmer air on its way down, which appears as a trail.
A grey trail indicates the droplets of water from clouds at low levels, whereas the trails from high-level clouds are composed of ice crystals and appear pale or white.
