"Celebs"

At some point over the course of my life, the media became a bit hysterical. I don't just mean the red tops, it happened across the board, the start of process that ended up with the ridiculous clickbait of Buzzfeed. Personally, I first became aware of the process when Melody Maker put Suede - who'd yet to release a single - on their front cover under the caption "The best new band in Britain". (They weren't.)

Over the years, albums have become 'classics' during the first rush of sales and enthusiasm, and we've seen people, albeit talented people, gushingly described as geniuses. In this rush for superlatives, we've lost our grading system.

And as part of this process, we have seen the dubious prize of celebrity handed out to people who have done less and less to earn it. We seem to have people who are famous just for being famous. It's insane.

And, fortunately, pretty easy to avoid. I was having my car serviced, today, and while I waited I watched them setting up the dealership for a "VIP" event at the weekend. All these cutouts were assembled from flatpacks and stood around near the door.

From the left, I recognised (I think), Bruno Mars (thanks to the hat), Colin Firth, and a Disney Princess (I'm not sure which one). I know you can't see all of them but one of the ones at the back might have been Posh Spice. (Ah, the Spice Girls. They might not have been all that talented but I always thought they were fun.)

For me, ignorance of celebrities is bliss.
