Coldham's Gravel Pit.

This is the old gravel pit on Coldham's Common, Cambridge. It is now a private place for fishing. As children, my sister and brothers would play there, with no sense of danger for the very deep water, and no adults supervising us. I never saw anybody swim in it. We just had fishing nets made from bamboo canes taken from dad's runner beans, and one of our mum's old stockings cut up and shared between us. No tights in those days. Then we would tie string around a jam jar and carry our tiddlers, newts or frog spawn home. Our childhood pleasures were so simple, although we did have a TV that was in the 'front' room for viewing after tea.
