Rampside Lighthouse

Today's the day ............................. for a leading light

This fascinating square-shaped, obelisk-like tower is the Rampside Lighthouse - a navigation beacon located in the small village of Rampside on the Furness Peninsula in South Cumbria.

Also known as 'The Needle' , it was built in 1875.  It is the only surviving example of 13 such beacons built around Barrow-in-Furness during the late 19th century to aid vessels into the town's port.  It is 20 metres (66 ft) tall and is constructed from red and yellow bricks.  Rampside Lighthouse was designated a Grade II listed building by English Heritage in 1991.

It's now surrounded by marshy grass and stands out of the water - but as you can see from the extra, that wasn't always the case ...........................
