Summer At Whitley Bay
Pink Floyd Album Tracks - Day 30
"Your Possible Pasts" from "The Final Cut" (1983)
This is a bit of a cheat because sunny Whitley Bay was not a possible past for me, it WAS my past. I spent most of the first 21 years of my life here. The reasons for being prepared to cheat a little are 1. Its getting more difficult to find the right track related Blip as we get towards the end of the month, 2. I needed at least one track from "The Final Cut" and 3. I have just spent a very enjoyable day with my wife and youngest daughter and wanted a Blip to mark the occasion.
We had a walk along the prom and coffee and a plastic scone in the Rendezvous Cafe which I don't think has changed in over 30 years. I think the scone I had today may have been on the counter since I was last in there.
The lighthouse has always been the iconic image of the town. I remember my mother being particularly angry when there was a suggestion that it should be pulled down when it was decommissioned in 1984.
I had so many memories come back to me today the strongest being that even in the summer it's bl**dy freezing. Don't be fooled by the blue sky it was blowing a gale with sand storms down on the beach. Everywhere you looked there were people in big coats and woolly hats. You can't beat summer at the seaside on the North East coast!
A good day.
