Nandayus nenday
Nandayus nenday is an up-and-comer in the feral parrot phenomenon of the United States. Thought by some to be the next feral population to really take off, so to speak, the Black-Hooded Parakeet hails originally from lower South America (i.e. southern Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina). Adept at thriving in urban environments, this black-headed beauty has become a very popular import, as well as a frequent escape, prompting some states to ban its sale or possession.
While officially left off the latest version of the ABA checklist, Nandayus nenday may soon be giving the Monk Parakeet a run for its money.
How stoked was I to see another feral parakeet today?? I love south Florida! All I want to do is drive around town listening for that God-awful squawking in the hopes that it may be another one of these gorgeous gems. There were four of these Black-Headed Parakeets at Siesta Beach this afternoon, sitting (mostly) quietly on telephone lines. As two pairs, they preened and snuggled one another in a horridly adorable fashion; I could hardly stand it.
