Confluence of Derwent and Cocker

Since 1874, Jennings Brewery (left of photo) has stood at the confluence of Cockermouth's two rivers. It draws Lakeland water, not from the rivers as might be expected, but from its own well.  The Derwent (left) flows down from Bassenthwaite Lake; the Cocker (right) from Crummockwater. This peaceful scene was transformed in 2009 and 2015 when both rivers broke their banks during winter storms and flood water swamped the town.
