Jedburgh Abbey
Today's the day ......................... for a Borders' raid
A trip today through the Scottish Borders to Kelso - but, on the way, we stopped off for a look at Jedburgh Abbey.
One of the four border abbeys, Jedburgh Abbey was founded by David I in around 1138 for Augustinian canons. Since then it has endured a turbulent 900-year history mainly because its close location to the English border has meant that it was frequently targeted by invading border armies.
But it was the coming of the Scottish Reformation that finally signalled the end for the great Abbey of St. Mary of Jedburgh in 1560 ....................
