The Marina

Last week the first phase of the Fishguard Marine development was given Planning consent by our beloved County Council. This should be good news as a £90m development should bring jobs and stimulate our economy.Naturally the scheme has been controversial and some have openly opposed it. However pemittion is in place and as long as the £90m can be found the Marina will be built.
Leaving the harbour, in my picture, is the Stena Europe and the future of the Stena  service to Ireland is my main concern. The development of the Marina will also deliver extra land and services for the use of Stena and the company is a partner with the development company, Conygar,. The plans for the harbour would secure the future of our port as the shortest route to southern Ireland but if the scheme does not get built then that future is in doubt.Stena is the largest private sector employer in the north of our County and although they employ significantly less people than they used to loosing them would be unthinkable.
The Welsh Government could step in to secure the future of our harbour and they have added the harbour and the surrounding area into the enterprise zone that was established after the Murco oil refinery closed. However they are cash strapped and after the brexit vote I cannot see the European Union stepping in to support our strategically important Euroroute gateway to Southern Ireland. What a mess!!!!!
