The Watts Chapel
Designed and built in 1896 by the wife of George Watts in his memory. It's a tiny but exquisitely (if you like ornate Art Nouveau-ery) crafted memorial chapel in the Surrey village of Compton. More of it in Extras.
I was there because Z came down for the afternoon with an idea that we go for a walk followed by a refreshment of some sort. The walk started promisingly as we strode off along a sandy, wide part of the North Downs Way. Before long though the sand turned to the most impressive deep, dark, squelchy mud. That the path was flanked by steep banks to either side meant no 'over it, under it or around it'. We just had to go through it. But we didn't: a pair of mountain bikers tried to pedal squelchily past us and as they did so ground to a standstill then slowly keeled over where they stopped. Having waited and watched as they ploughed onwards we decided that chapel exploration was a much more attractive option. Exploration accomplished, we headed back for tea, soup and cake at the Watts Gallery Cafe. Which unfortunately is now a pale simulacrum of its previous incarnation but still a lot better than no tea and cake at all.
