I like arriving at Silverado and hearing that mom is walking the halls. That way I can get into her room and put back whatever stuff she has packed up and stacked on her bed or the chairs. Lately it has been the pillows and blankets and her bathroom stuff, plus a few clothes and the radio. I put all the pillows back on her bed, arrange the big doll back in its chair, put clothes back in her closet, plug in the radio and turn it on, and then I go look for her. When we go into her room to get her coat (if she doesn't already have it on), I say, "How cozy and nice your room looks!"

We had some uncanny moments of clarity. When she said she was looking forward to going home and sleeping in her own bed, I asked what she liked best about that. She said, "the quiet." Can't argue with that. But she also said,  "But you probably don't want me to go home, do you?" I said I wanted her to have lots of good care, like she got where she was. She said, "And at the old place, there were those men who walked through the back yard. So that wasn't very safe." We agreed that there were advantages to being alone (the quiet) and also disadvantages (not feeling safe). That stable ground lasted about two minutes, and then she was back to asking if I'd take her home.

Oh well.
