Risen from the ashes
The Oban Cinema House Ltd was registered in April 1913 and the cinema opened in July of that year. At some later date it was destroyed by fire and in 1950 was rebuilt on the same site, and known as the Highland Theatre. In 2010 the business was declared bankrupt and was bought by the community and renamed The Phoenix Cinema.
It shows a good choice of films though how it makes enough to survive I really don't know, even though it's largely staffed by volunteers. We went this afternoon to see 'Hidden Figures' and there was probably fewer than 20 folk there.
An excellent film, based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, though with some changes. I read the book not long ago and discrimination against women, particularly coloured women, in NASA and elsewhere is very much the theme of both the book and the film. Very good and thoroughly recommended. Kevin Costner was the only name I recognised, however.
