Dulce et Decorum Est

Tomorrow is Çanakkale Day, when Turks remember the WWI Gallipoli campaign in the Dardanelles ın 1915.  Our remembrance ceremony today was moving, as always, with readings, and music  ( Canakkale Turkish Song with photos). The faces of today's youth, reflected in the lacquer of the piano, most of them only a little younger than the lads, of all nations, whose lives we remembered today.

Cannakale is a city in northwestern Turkey in the Marmara region, on the Dardanelles Strait. It’s a gateway to the Gallipoli WWI battlefields, north of the narrow strait. The archaeological site at Troy, including an ancient theater, is southwest of the city. - Wikipedia

“Those heroes that shed their blood
And lost their lives.
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours,
You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land they have
Become our sons as well”.

 - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk  (1934)
