Almond trees and yellow-flowering weeds have all come into their own this week giving a general aura of vibrant green. Vines have begun to bud and so sheep have been banished from the vineyard. Up and down the island road collapses are being shored up, some of which have been waiting several years. One particular group of orange cones has been in place all the while we have lived here. I imagine that at some later stage the island will be visited by a road surfacing team and all will be well again.
On both Saturday and Sunday mornings the power was off from 08:00 until 14:00 while a team removed trees overhanging both the road and the power supply lines. It really is unprecedented to have this much in the way of infrastructure work taking place so early in the year.
The tourist season begins in May and so during April hoteliers and restaurateurs busy themselves with paint pots and perhaps new linen. Car rental companies have their cars serviced but the island's infrastructure usually remains untouched. Greek people take their holidays in July and August and even though hotels are full of foreigners from May, potholes are not usually fixed until June. What's going on??
