Politics--In Tatters

An abandoned doorway on Boulevard Raspail in Paris.  (The subject of billboards and posters has an honorable tradition in Paris photography of the 20th century, though I would not claim that this really belongs :)  My very favorite blip in this vein is here--don't miss it! 

The image belies the elegance of the neighborhood; it's around the corner from the Musée Maillol, where we went this afternoon to see a wonderful exhibition  on the heritage of Paul Rosenberg (1881-1959), a dominant art dealer and collector in Paris in the interwar years. As a Jew, his art works were perhaps especially targeted by the Nazis in their pursuit of "degenerate art". Touchingly, the exhibition was organized by his granddaughter, Anne Sinclair; it concludes with a portrait of her at age 4 in 1952 by Marie Laurencin. Deservedly, it is a very popular show.
