Warton Crag

Today's the day .................. to take a detour

This is Warton Crag, a 535ft high, limestone ridge which forms the backdrop to Warton Village.  It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is managed for its nature conservation interest by Lancaster City Council, the RSPB, Lancashire Wildlife Trust and Lancashire County Council. It is a mixture of limestone grassland with scrub and woodland and is nationally important for butterflies and moths. 

The former quarry on the west of the crag that you see here is a regular breeding site for peregrine falcons that are protected by a Falcon Watch team of volunteers.  There were a couple of watchers on duty when I called by briefly this afternoon.  

And as I continued on my way home, my eyes were drawn to a view of Ingleborough (see extra) that I had never noticed before.  It was in full sunshine - and with a covering of snow that made it look as if it was floating above the surrounding countryside .......................
