Killdeer

Back at the wildlife refuge, you can find a beautiful killdeer
with a broken wing in permanent captivity.  I was always
fascinated by killdeer out in the fields.  It was my job
to fetch the cows home for milking as a child. 
During nesting season, a killdeer will feign wing injury by
dragging one wing and hopping away from its nesting site,
which is out in the open on flat surfaces of the pasture. 
It was only during my childhood several times, that I was able to find one's nest and speckled eggs.

A shorebird you can see without going to the beach, Killdeer are graceful plovers common to lawns, golf courses, athletic fields, and parking lots. These tawny birds run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they've startled up any insect prey.
