Abstract Thursday 91: "Rhythm"

Thanks to Ingeborg who's asked us to illustrate the theme "Rhythm" for today's Abstract Thursday blips.


I'm taking advantage of another creation of one of our sons, this time Son #2. He did this abstract painting whilst undertaking an Art Foundation course back in 2005: he painted it as a way of expressing himself whilst listening to a very rhythmic piece of music - "Hella Good" from the album Rock Steady by No Doubt. There's a video of it here on Youtube. It's a bit weird to my taste (the video, not the painting - we like that and it has pride of place on our wall).

It's a bit similar to another piece of artwork he did during the same course, part of which I've blipped before. At least today's is easier to display on the wall - the other one is 3.3 metres long and 2.2 metres high, whereas this one's only about the size of a 55cm television.

Now: Many thanks to everyone who had a guess about my Whatsaat Wednesday blip yesterday. Accolades go to inukshukne and JohnRH who correctly identified it as a saxophone. Clearly Shutterup and 60plus got it as well but didn't spell it out in detail. Madwill was onto it too, saying it was a "clarinet or something like that". I did love the other suggestions, which were great fun and very creative! The whole instrument is shown in today's extra.

The reason I chose to blip my saxophone is that last night I went to a fabulous saxophone concert. It was given by John Harle who as you may know is a world-famous sax player. The concert took place at the Royal Grammar School, Newcastle where John was a pupil. It was particularly nice for me to attend as that is also my alma mater, and for a couple of years in the late 1960s I used to sit beside John as we both played our clarinets in the school orchestra. I'm not surprised that he has risen to the dizzy heights of fame - he was brilliant even then: although he's about 4 years younger than me his playing was on a different level entirely from mine in those days. Since then his playing has just got better and better, whilst regrettably mine has got worse & worse (if that's possible!). There's no way I'd try to play outside our house as my musical talent is almost non-existent (really) but I do occasionally get my sax or clarinet out and have some fun with it. The trouble is that blipping takes up a lot of the time I should be spending practising...:-)
