Hill Top Ramblings

One more orchid

The weather today took a bit of a dive. For some reason we headed up the highest hill in the Algarve, Foia, some 900m.
Temperature at the top 6C ! Fortunately there was a tourist shop right at the top, conveniently close to the cafe so that the minimum time was spent outside in the howling gale before buying a hat see today's extras. Suitably equipped we made a dive for the car and headed off to the seaside in the hope of better weather.
Succes! We arrived at Algezur on the west coast and the sun was shining, and out of the wind it was at least 12C. It was worth getting out of the car for the outstanding and unique garrigue flora of this area. Every step we found more species, including the Gennaria orchid which you can pick out at the bottom of the photo.
The sea was splendid with enormous Atlantic breakers, and a tidal race coming in up the river entrance.
All very bracing!
