Nine Standards

I decided to learn from yesterday and avoid the Lakes.
After giving the grass it's first cut I headed up the Nine Standards at Kirkby Stephen which is one I've wanted to do for a long time. A watershed of England ....everything to the left goes to the Irish Sea, everything to the right heads to the North sea. No-one knows who or exactly why these cairns were built. They go back a long way and a favourite theory is that they were built by the Romans to look like fierce-some troops and to put off potential attackers.
As I headed home I had a brief foray into more well confusion that I'll probably come back to sometime.
Found it hard to believe that it was a year ago that the Jellacotta army exhibition was touring a care home back in another time, in Norwich.
