Common Enchantments

Lizard Sunning

Today we drove from Tuba City to Holbrook, AZ to spend the day at the Petrified Forest National Park.  Another amazing place.   Large trees from 230 million years ago that were turned to rock as they went through many changes of soil, minerals and water.     So many colors!

We were walking along the path back to the car from one scenic area when I spotted this lizard warming in the sun on one of the petrified stumps.    It is a collared Great Basin lizard, probably a female.  The only wildlife we have seen except for  birds we thought were crows but they are actually ravens.  Very large and like to hang around the parking areas waiting for food.

More photos of the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert area in the extras along with a raven photo.  The sunset was pretty from up on the hill in the Painted Desert Park.   Maybe next time I take a sunset shot it will have a big cactus silhouette.

Next stop Tombstone!
