Castlerigg Stone Circle

On my way to climb Blencathra (mountain in view), I took a wrong road and ended up passing this ancient Neolithic site. It gave me the opportunity to see one of the country's earliest stone circles dating from about 3,000 BC. There are 40 main stones, the heaviest of which is thought to weigh 16 tons, and the entire circle is impressive. So too is Blencathra, and I had a wonderful day climbing to the top and back again!
