A Favourite Place #4
I love walking down to Burgoyne Bay and passing this old farmhouse on the side of the road. Note the shadows - it was a lovely sunny day!
The date on the little top square is 1901, not very old in other parts of the world, but quite old for non-Indigenous settlers here.
Canada celebrates its 150th birthday this year, although Indigenous people have been here for much longer. "B.C. archaeologists have excavated a settlement...in traditional Heiltsuk Nation territory...and dated it to 14,000 years ago, during the last ice age where glaciers covered much of North America." Here's an article on the archeological find if you're interested. I had quite a few students from the Heiltsuk Nation and was very honoured to receive a button blanket made for me by one of them, Joann Green, who is a hereditary chief and who has done incredible work in education in her community.
