Fugue State
A. What is happening in the Photo?
- Though this picture does not directly depict what I want to discuss it does show the person I would like to discuss. This is my grandfather. 2 years ago he suffered from a fugue state. This is defined as, "Dissociative fugue, formerly fugue state or psychogenic fugue, is a DSM-5 dissociative disorder. It is a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by reversible amnesia for personal identity, including the memories, personality, and other identifying characteristics of individuality." My grandfather had an episode where he could not recall any memory from the previous 2-3 hours. He had parked his car several blocks fro the house and didn't even know how he had gotten home. It is believed by doctors that it was a one time experience brought on by sever stress. He hasn't had an episode since, so all seems well, but nonetheless it was a scary experience.
B. How does this relate to phycology?
- This is a dissociative disorder categorized in DSM5, which we have discussed in class. It is a prime example of what high levels of stress can do to your cognitive functions.
C. What Psychological persective does this realte to?
- I would say this relates more to the Cognitive perspective, only because there is no real physical cause for a fugue state. It is brought on by stress which is something your cognitive mind perceives, and then to cope with these feelings your brain dissociates.
