OMG!!! What a day...
So this was my 12 hour shift today (it actually ended up being a 13 hour day, but what's that between friends). So, this is day 4. I'm on surgery with 2 great vets today. We start off with plenty of routine procedures but even they were fraught with excitement....as my nurse went to change the depth of anaesthesia, a shriek from across the room warned her of the huge spider under the chamber which was just waking up from his slumber. Initially we though 'Huntsman" - scary name, but actually one of the few non-venomous spiders in Oz. No such luck. It was a "white tailed spider". These guys actually feed on other spiders, but unfortunately a bite to us causes massive skin necrosis and tissue death (though there is some debate about this). So, whilst the 'Pommy vet' (that's me) was saying, "hold up, I want a photo!" the nurse had already swatted and killed it. Mildly sad, but when an Ozzie reacts this way, I guess I should bow to thier superior knowledge!!!
Next was a Little Penguin with a dislocated shoulder. Although this picture looks worrying, fear not - he looks floppy only because he is aneasthetised. I would not be holding him if he was not!!!! They are vicious whilst conscious.
Next up.... My staffie which has Puffer fish poisoning..... PUFFER FISH!!!!! I want to come back to the UK....
A long day, but it was great!!!!!!!
