The End Of The Line.

In the 1930's Golden Acre Park (Leeds) operated as a theme park.
On Good Friday 26th April 1932 a miniature railway opened circling the whole of the lake and travelling a distance of just over a mile.
Two engines worked the line pulling open top carriages and in 1935 a dining carriage was added.
Such was the popularity of the railway that one train was launched by Hollywood film star Anna Neagle.
Sadly the end of the line came towards the end of 1938.

This photo shows the site of one of the three Lakeside Stations that worked the line during the 1930's.
In 2003, 65 years after the line closed, the discovery of five concrete blocks, which used to be the edge of the platform, was the inspiration behind the re-creationof this small section of the railway.
The area has been planted in a naturalistic way, using cultivated grasses, and wild flower seeds, to give the impression of an abondoned railway line.
At the moment it is at it's best and lookd beautiful, and rather romantic in the sunlight today.

This is a wonderful place to go for a walk at any time of year.
Feed the ducks on the lake, go for a walk in the woods. In Summer, have a picnic on the grass, walk round the gardens, greenhouses, vegetable garden, National Collection of dahlias ,chrysanthemums, and day lilies.
Then have a coffee, or a cuppa, a cake, or Breakfast,lunch,or tea, and sit out on the cafe terrace with a lovely view of the park.

We finished our morning with a sausage and bacon sandwich for MrC and a toasted currant teacake for me ,plus two large mugs of coffee!
