Never stop learning.
Perfect Spring weather. Spent the afternoon taking part with 16 others in a guided walk called "The Stones of Arnside". The first photo shows our expert leader giving us some geological background before set out.
I have walked round the village for over 20 years but now I shall look differently at many of our buildings.
We learnt about the different types of limestone used and how it survives weathering. Then there are sandstone lintels and granite blocks.
We discovered how you can find fossils. See extra 1. And that some stone may be brought long distances as in extra 2 where this monument was made of Portland stone from the famous quarry on the south coast of England. It was erected in 1935, the year of my birth.
All in all a very good use of an afternoon.
