The Angel of Purity

I was at Victoria Baths (in Manchester) today working in the shop – another one of my volunteering activities.  Today’s blip is the centre window in the Turkish Rest Room, which is one of the most spectacular stained glass windows at Victoria Baths, although not my favourite window in the building to be honest.

In the 1970’s the Scottish television journalist Fyfe Robertson did a piece on Victoria Baths and called the figure depicted in the stained glass window the “Angel of Purity”.  The name has stuck, which I think is a little unfortunate since the figure depicted in the window is obviously not an angel; it is a water nymph.

I don’t know - you’d have thought that a TV journalist would have been up to speed on the different attributes of creatures with wings, particularly those that have been around for centuries.  I can only conclude that they don't have water nymphs in Scotland ;-)
