Memorial on Great Gable
At midday, I arrived at the summit of Great Gable just as cloud swept in and obliterated all views. The weather deteriorated from then onwards, but I had time to take this photo of the memorial erected on a huge slab of rock beneath the summit cairn (899m / 2,949ft). A memorial service is held here on Remembrance Sunday each November, regardless of the weather, and hundreds of people make the strenuous ascent by 11am.
The top part of the memorial depicts, in 3D, the geographical relief of the area. The bottom part lists the names of the 20 members of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club who died in the First World War. The Club bought 3,000 acres of land, including Great Gable, and donated it to the National Trust in memory of these members. The plaque was dedicated on Whit Sunday in 1924, in front of 500 people. For me, it's one of the most moving war memorials I have seen.
