More Pansy Folk Lore.

Legend says that when white pansies were pierced by Cupid's arrow, they gained their colours. Along with the colour they were also given magic powers to be used in love potions. The Victorian's meaning of the pansy was to think, particularly of love. If a maiden was left one by an admirer, he would mean, ' I am thinking of our forbidden love.' However  it is considered bad luck to give a man pansies.
