Blackstone Edge
This afternoon I walked up Littleborough's Roman Road towards Blackstone Edge. Although it is thought that the paving is not Roman, the line of the road follows a direct route to Ilkley and on to York, so is probably of Roman origin. It is a scheduled ancient monument. At its summit is the "Aiggin Stone" a medieval way marker and resting point. Its name may come from the Norman-French "aigualle" meaning a needle or from the military word "agger" which is an ancient term for a dyke or causeway.
The stones in today's Blip are a crag at the summit of Blackstone Edge, a gritstone escarpment 472 metres above sea level, visible from miles away. This is a view from the summit, showing the well-preserved trig point and Hollingworth Lake far below.
Many thanks to Nickimags888 for hosting Mono Monday.
