"Goodbye babies........"

Another wet day today, with a fresh dumping of snow on the hills surrounding us, which has certainly dropped the outside temperature considerably. It feels like we are back a couple of months during winter, not spring! This month alone we have had 145ml of rain. The ground is saturated, and we still have lots of puddles lakes in the paddocks.

The poor wee calves born overnight were sitting in mud and shivering when we got to their paddock this morning. We have put them in the calf shed, covered them with hay and given them a nice warm drink of milk. Hopefully that will perk them up a bit. Their mothers went in to our colostrum milking herd, and they will be milked this afternoon, and their colostrum will be given to their calves.

Today's picture (taken on my iPhone as it is too wet and muddy to take my camera out on the farm), shows the new mums looking over the fence, to see where their babies have gone. They were mooing madly, but as soon as the calves were out of sight, they went back to eating grass. It's very sad seeing them like this, but it is amazing how fast they forget about their calves when they haven't seen or smelt them for a couple of days.
