Over the sea to Skye
A day for superlatives but I'm not sure I know enough.
Bright sunshine again as we headed up a single track road for views over Eilean Donan Castle and the Loch beyond. Back on the main road we came across a road block, a herd of wild goats. We saw the odd one yesterday at the roadside munching the gorse but they were all moving en mass this morning.
Swinging off the main road we climbed Mam Ratagan with amazing views back over Morvich, where we spent last evening and the 5 Sisters of Kintail.
On to the ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea seen here. (The last turntable ferry in the U.K.) We stopped just above the ferry as we spotted people with binoculars. Yes they had spotted a Sea Eagle which are well known in this area.
We missed the first ferry seen here and were 6th in the queue for the next. It takes 6 but only 12 passengers and there were too many so we had to wait again but who cares with this scenery and weather.
Whilst waiting we heard the Cuckoo for the first time and there were three seals swimming off shore. Then there was the Sea Eagle again or it was another one. You can see him in the extra. He has a fish in his claws and was being bombarded by gulls trying to take it from him. All this was before 11.00am!
After a coffee we drove down the Sleat Peninsula to Armadale Castle seat of the Clan Donald. On our last visit we were in Dunvegan and the castle there is the seat of Clan Macleod.
I wanted to come here as our grandchildren will be Macdonalds. They do originate from here though Fiona was telling us last night that the two brothers that left had lived on Raasay, a small island off Skye - famours for 'Callum's Road'.
We had a 3 mile walk through the woodland of the estate, lots of scented bluebells and wild garlic and then climbed up to track with views over the Sound of Sleat and the comings and goings of the Calmac ferry which crosses from Mallaig to Armadale. Another picnic lunch in these lovely surroundings and then a visit to the Museum of the Isles. Sadly the castle is now a ruin having been abandoned during the Second World War.
Now in the north of the island, checked in to our accommodation, and half way through dinner at the nearby Inn - Cullen Skink followed by Herb Crusted Hake. Chris is having the same but he's had mussels.
I know the weather won't last but another glorious day.
