Lapwinging it

A lovely walk in disappointingly dull and surprisingly cold weather through Smardale today.
The wildflowers are really starting to emerge now, but no orchids yet. We saw a good selection of wildlife - fighting warblers, drilling woodpeckers and distant kestrels - and it was especially pleasing to see red squirrels seem to be established there now.
As we left i heard an odd call from over a drystone wall - certainly not the usual call of a Lapwing - but there a pair were. As anyone who's seen these wonderful birds in the air will appreciate - I'm especially pleased to have been able to catch one in flight.
