100+ Derelict Windows
Over 50 of them in this picture of the impressive frontage to the Royal Western Hotel built for Brunel to accommodate passengers travelling to and from America in his steamship the Great Western. The passengers arrived by coach or by the new railway but had to wait for the tides to allow for safe passage through the locks and out into the river Avon. In the 1980's the City Council started using the building as offices but vacated them early this year. Unite are hoping to change them into student accommodation. Behind the building is the ‘Horse Bazaar’ which features an amphitheatre – “a long narrow space framed by ruined walls with an apsidal end relieved by the frames of tall arched windows” - used as an arena to auction horses but now maybe it will be used as a theatre. This is my entry for Derelict Sunday thanks to freespiral who is hosting this month.
