What do you want?
The sun was up before us despite the forecast for a cloudy, morning. We were soon off to Achiltibuie to the Post Office and then beyond to Achduart to start a 5.5 mile circular walk at the base of the Coigach Peninsula. It goes to Culnacraig, literally the end of the road and back and was the first walk we ever did here 7 years ago.
As we approached on the single track road I spotted this fella almost at the side of the road. I had seen 4 hinds on our route across the peninsula but we didn't stop. I got out of the car and he took no notice of me not even lifting his head from munching this bit of green grass. I walked along to get a shot at a better angle and motioned for Chris to follow in the car. At this he looked up, perfect for my shot but with a look of 'Do you mind not interrupting my breakfast!'
Our walk led us above the coast towards the head of Loch Broom with the Torridon mountains in the hazy distance (extra). You can carry on past the tiny settlement of Culnacraig a further 8 miles to Strathcanaird. It is known as the posties route as it is literally the route taken on foot by the postman from Ullapool. There are warnings about the danger of this route as there are no foot paths and it skirts the steep foothills above the Loch.
To the right of us was the Minch and we saw the Calmac ferry 'Loch Seaforth' heading over to Stornaway, a route we took a couple of years ago. The downside of this walk is approx 1.5 mile walking back on the single track road but we only saw two chaps and a dog walking and one car! Surprising as everyone here is saying how much busier it is since the publicising of the NC 500 route.
The other compensation of the return is the amazing views over the Summer Isles - extra. Horse Island is the biggest one in the foreground and Tanera Mor, the only inhabited one in the back ground. Extra 2 - you might just spot a white building in the centre of the extra 2 picture, near the shore. It is the Youth Hostel. Not a bad spot!
We saw a Cuckoo which we have been hearing since arriving and some Wheatears and Stonechats, not something we see much at home.
We drove back to Polglass and had lunch at the Piping College cafe. We sat outside and all the tables were occupied by cyclists. Again a sign of the increasing busyness in the area now.
Returning 'home' I sat in the garden (more of a sheltered paddock) and finished my knitting, yeah! Whilst Chris fulfilled the inner lumberjack in him by chopping yet more wood!
It turned a little cool just after 5 so we took a walk down to the beach. Only one car in the car park and a couple of bikers setting up camp above the rocks. We're now settling in for the evening watching the changing light over the mountains as the sun sun goes down.
Will it be back tomorrow? Who knows, our luck must run out sometime but we've had a pretty good run.
