Sod self catering - Sa Calobra, Sardines & Chips

Chuffin' chuffed is an understatement!

Sowing the seed of this route with Liz a long time ago, tweaking my back 8 weeks before we went on a cycling holiday wasn't the best of timing. But this is what my little mind has been attempting to build up to since we arrived home from China.

Not getting beyond 33 miles and much less ascent, I wasn't really certain it would come off. Yesterday, I was thumbing knots, deep heating and hot packing my right hip - it's now beautifully bruised but this morning, was playing and raring to go!

Blue sky, light winds and the perfect temperature had us merrily singing our steady way up the hillside for a drink at the first summit before descending to Sa Calobra, a famous and, I have to say, not in the slightest bit overrated, snaking road to the coast.

We stuck to photos on the descents and pedalling slowly on the ascents. Everyone overtook us but we could still sing at the top! We doubled back to the cafe and had great chats with a number of satisfied riders.

The views were wild and we timed the traffic perfectly with quiet roads on the way down and the coaches arriving while we had a drink and food at the coast. Many cars were making their way down with bikes squashed in between which didn't look so pleasant so we felt doubly lucky.

Before arriving home, we took the road to the fishing village we visited on the first afternoon for an early tea.  Almost a catastrophe as they weren't serving food and I was having a hanger attack. But, after drinks and me buying some scoobies at the local supermarket, we found a fine little terrace cafe for fresh sardines and chips and a peppermint tea. No finer end to a stonkingly good day out.
