Path to enlightenment
The International Buddhist Centre on Riccarton Rd is, in my opinion, one of Christchurch's architectural gems. Designed by the eminent Christchurch practice Warren & Mahoney, the buildings honey-glow sandstone facade (imported from India) brings a warm, rich texture to this part of the busy street.
Four Buddhas adorn the front of the centre in a variety of poses; the openings the occupy in the facade a reminiscent of caves - indeed the design was based on ancient rock temples in China's Taklamakan desert region.
In this shot, I love the juxtaposition of the geometric lines and the graceful curves of the deity. The quirky appearance of the statue from below adds an air of cheekiness too - something you don't necessarily associate with a religious building.
