Bambi
Me again, with a new little friend. It's fawn season at The Wildlife Center suddenly. All sorts of other babies too, of course - but the opossums and bunnies and squirrels and birds have been coming in for weeks, whereas the fawns just started arriving a few days ago. Many, if not most, are kidnapped (fawnnapped) and really didn't need to be helped in anyway. Mother white-tailed deer leave their fawns alone all day long and the fawns stay put exactly where they were left. Mum comes back at dusk and feeds him/her. The fawn has no odor of its own and is well hidden in the grass and thus is safer than it would be toddling along after its mother. Anyway - humans tend to assume the fawn is an orphan and snatch it up to "save" it. If they think to call the center first they are instructed to leave it alone and see if Mum doesn't return in the evening. But sometimes they just show up with it after having kept it somewhere overnight and then it's generally too late to return it to its mother. Sometimes, of course, they actually are orphans and do need our help.
So - it's fawn season - and they're adorable. And obviously I didn't take this photo - my friend and fellow volunteer, Pam, took it with my phone.
