Viannos Omalas Plateau
Mrs BB loves Greek war history and has just finished the book 'The Secret Island' by Patricia Wilson which is a novel centred around about 500 greek men, boys and male babies murdered in Crete around mid September 1943, called the Viannos Massacres.
We visited the monument at the village (see extra in which I've included the two memorial plaques) which are very moving. We would liked to have gone around the museum next to it but that was closed.
We continued following Car tour 8 of The Sunflower book of car tours & walks of Eastern Crete and went a few miles along a dirt track road to Viannos Omalos Plateau at the top of an extremly high bending mountain road. The result was stunning; a massive green plain, lakes, sheep, goats, olive trees surrounded by moutains and lit by beautiful mediterannean light. Similar to the plains of Africa you sometimes see of television. The Blipfoto is one I like of a Goat high in a tree on a branch, feeding.
We then had to turn around and retrace our drive several miles down the dirtrack to continur our drive to Myrtos: I'd bought a large 'reel' of home made sausages at the village butchers and it was so good I wanted more! The home made wine was extremely good and we repurchased some of that along with home made feta cheese.
After my sausage meal tonight we're walking to the 'authentic' greek/irish bar in the next village for a good drink. No sunrises for me tomorrow!
